History of the Book of Medicine

Healthy Hawaii Vacation

As I take a break from the book of medicine, I'd like to suggest something that has probably helped my peace of mind and my health and even my energy level more than possibly anything I've done in the last seven years. It was a vacation to Hawaii. You won't find something like that in a medical book, but the concept of getting away from everything and relaxing is something that is widely recommended and historically has been recommended by many doctors. There's something special about Hawaii, however it is difficult to describe. About seven years ago I took a vacation to Hawaii and stayed in a beach condo. We rented a nice little place on the beach and stayed there for about 10 days. It was a fantastic experience. Just recovering from jet lag by sleeping in the beach breeze was an experience that I still haven't forgotten and probably never will. I learned to love mahi-mahi, I hiked up Diamond Head and several other small mountains in the area. Plus I went jogging several miles each day.
Oh and on my healthy Hawaiian vacation I also spent a lot of time in the water!
I am definitely going to go back to Hawaii someday soon. Knowing what I know today, I will probably try something a little different but stay focused on the same theme. I've been researching why Makena oceanfront condo and based on some of the pictures I've seen I think I'm definitely going to try them out.

Soaking up Ecotourism in Hawaii

While we were there the first time, we soaked up a lot of the local culture and the landscape. In retrospect that seems essential to the concept of having a healthy Hawaii vacation. after all it wouldn't be that healthy if we visited and harmed the environment or impaired the culture or did something damaging. It seems to me to be very important to visit a place and leave it as good as you found it and if possible maybe a little better. This kind of touches on the theme of ecotourism. Ecotourism is the concept of visiting a place, and helping the local ecosystem and the local culture and possibly the local economy. Maui Beach - the palm tree seems to float We did all those things when we visited, and that helped us make a longer lasting connection during our vacation. The last thing you want is to stay in some cold corporate hotel, the type of place that you can find anywhere in the world only to walk away from the vacation more drained than when you started. Kind of like eating at McDonalds. We soaked up the culture and the history and the beauty of the environment and that's what made our vacation special.

  • Diarrhea and Dysentery from Impure Water

Diarrhea and Dysentery from Impure Water.  — the instances of outbreaks of these two diseases from contaminated water supply are very numerous, and probably most persons can recall examples of this kind.  The impurities which produce diarrhea and dysentery are suspended earthy matters, such as are found in most river waters after a rain; suspended animal and vegetable material; salty thing chlorides of Lyme and Magnesia, and nitrate of ammonia and of lime.  Besides the numerous outbreaks traceable to direct sewage contamination, there are several instances recorded of indirect poisoning the water supply from this source, as in the following curious case.

Just as a note about the style of writing or documentation, this paragraph seems to be unnecessary as a stand alone topic.  Instead it is basically a transition paragraph, yet the author chooses to use it as a stand alone sub topic instead of just using it to work his way from one topic to a very slight tangent in the next topic.  This would again seem to reflect the author’s possible motivation for not only being paid by the word but also with a stipend for important bolded topics.  This surely does not seem to be practical like following a guide on replacing coilovers in a car or fixing a plumbing problem, and it must have driven some readers nuts as they used this book in semi-emergencies looking for the answer to serious problems only to be distracted by useless sections like this.

  • Breathing Capacity of Lungs

Breathing Capacity of Lungs. –the breeding capacity of the lungs bears a close correspondence to the stature of man. For an ordinary sized man of about 5′8″ in height, it will be 230 cubic inches, or about 1 gallon of air, and for each additional inch of stature up to 6 feet, there will be an increase of 8 cubic inches. in a forcible expiration all the air in the lungs is not expelled; or still remains behind 100 cubic inches. thus, with his son expelled air, the breeding capacity of an ordinary sized man is about 330 cubic inches, or equivalent to 11 pints of air. Of the 230 cubic inches, 100 can only be forced into lungs by the exercise of great effort, and is available for emergencies as striking a heavy blow, or for the purpose of training, as in singing, rolling, running, climbing, etc.; but the extra amount of air old was on hand in the lungs is of great value, since it enables the lungs to perform their functions continuously, even under severe and violent exertions.

At this point in time I’m on page 47 of this text. We’ve been walking through basic anatomy, and I have a layman’s education in anatomy. I think this might be the first time that I’ve actually learned something conceivably useful from the book. I do not know how accurate it might be, I was intrigued by the concept that some of the air for the lungs remains in the lungs continuously. I do understand the concept of air pressure and this does make logical sense in that regards. It would also explain why it’s important to cover hole in the chest if you happen to puncture a lung. The puncture creates a deflated long which is lost that amount of air which remains at a constant level.

All in all I’m quite impressed that I have learned something from the book that’s meant to teach me something.
