





Psychiatrists -- psychiatrists are medical doctors or doctors of osteopath he that specialize in the diagnosis or treatment and prevention of mental illness. Their license to prescribe medications and sometimes seek further training to specialize in psychiatry or geriatric practices.
Psychologists -- clinical or counseling psychologist typically hold an advanced healthcare profession degree that requires five to seven years of study and at least a one-year internship. They train in psychology and typically treat mental illnesses utilizing psychotherapy. In addition to working with bipolar disorder patients they may work in a number of other areas from personality disorders to marriage problems to substance abuse counseling. Psychologists are not medical doctors but can be authorized to prescribe medication in some states.
Clinical social workers -- clinical social workers typically have a Masters degree in social work at their training and education can be in a wide range of things. They must have advanced training in most states require a license before they are allowed to provide mental health services. They are not allowed to prescribe medications or perform medical tests.
Psychiatric nurses -- psychiatric nurses are licensed registered nurses that have extra training in mental health. Psychiatric nurses may offer mental health assessments under the supervision of medical doctors. Similarly, under the supervision of medical doctors they may also provide psychotherapy and some management assistance of medication.
Advanced practice registered nurses -- advanced practice registered nurses have a Masters degree in psychiatric mental health and can diagnose and treat mental illnesses. Many states authorize advanced practice registered nurses to prescribe medications and they may be qualified to do this independent of the supervision of a doctor.
